Google Drive as a Media to
Promote Collaborative Learning in Extensive Reading Course
What if teachers cannot attend to the class, do they
can still sharing their knowledge?
A teacher, Gusti Nur Hafifah, harness the Google drive application to solve her problem. Since she could not attend the class, she conducted her class via Google drive. Her subject is Extended Reading which is a compulsory subject in her University.
A teacher, Gusti Nur Hafifah, harness the Google drive application to solve her problem. Since she could not attend the class, she conducted her class via Google drive. Her subject is Extended Reading which is a compulsory subject in her University.
The way of her to create her class is learning and
sharing. The students must review journal or article which the material
consisting education, linguistic, and literature can be selected by themselves
based on the schedule set up by the teacher. The three main field of English
department are selected since the students infrequently discover their interest
that will lead them to conduct English research field as the final task of
them.
The students do their self-learning by reading a
journal or article chosen by themselves outside the class. After reading and
comprehending the journal, students should submit to the Google provided by the
teacher. Moreover, the teacher provides the folder for each students. She also
sets the Google drive into ‘’everyone can edit’’ mode to permit her students to
submit or edit. Later, when the time is up, the teacher set the Google drive
into ‘’everyone can see’’ mode to prevent extra activity.
Furthermore, teacher provides collaborative learning
as well. It is conducted by asking her students to share one another when they
attend the class. Such collaborative activity allow both practising and
reinforcing the passage they have read. Likewise, novice information that the
students obtain from their companion give them new insight that is probably
useful in the future.

The Use of Schoology as Learning Management System
How to systemise your class when you as a teacher
would like to engage a technology to your monotonous classroom? Schoology might
be one of your considerations. Schoolgy is learning management system which can
be freely accessed and easily utilised. Suhandhini and Bustanuddin As Suaidy
introduce me deeply about this extraordinary web-based application and how to
cope with the technology need in this age.
This application has abundant features that can be
prominently designed for learning. Teachers can simply create a course and
share it to their students to learn the lesson. Teachers also can consider
students differences and coin the most appropriate learning style of the students.
Besides teachers, students can conveniently share and upload their learning
result or tasks from their teachers online via schoology. They can upload
various kinds of file such as text, picture, or even video.
Schoology provides not only the tool for interaction
between teacher and students but also the tool for parents. Parents deal with
this online learning process regarding monitoring their children process and
progress. Both teachers and parents can In this case collaborate to highly
track what students have done. By this feature, it is expected that learning
targets are able to achieve better.
Schoology provide a tool to motivate students to learn
more. It is badges. For instance, Students submitting the test or task first
and with correct answer, they get badge in their account. It will replace physical
gift from teacher to students but with the similar effect to encourage
students’ learning activity. Teachers can create the badge by their own self.

Corpus Linguistics and Data-Driven Language Learning
Teacher or
people probably question how speaker of a language know what the appropriate
word to select to utter and deliver meaning is. Or perhaps teachers get
adversary to convince the students the right word to say. Are we a native
speaker, we are naturally able to select the mean word. It is another case if
the language is our second or foreign language.
Teachers or leaners consult their dictionary when a
word confuses them to find out the meaning. They expose themselves to authentic
English text to boost their skill up. Conversely, what they will check if they
want to know the collocation? Ignatius Tri Endarto share to answer this kind of
disturbing question. In his research under the tittle Corpus Linguistics and
Data-Driven Language Learning He discussed it much.
His discovery is started when he found that many books
and newspapers are read and it is found that grammar are change. Shortly, when
a text is computed by using corpus website, the result is totally fascinating. For
instance, you can find what word is frequently used in the selected text. It
must be article like “the” and “a” in the top line. However, after the article,
it must be the most prominent word written. It can be used to facilitate the
ESP material since the word which is used in business field for example will
occur.
The most wonderful finding regarding Corpus linguistic
is the grammar rule. Written text is immensely rich of language usage. When
teachers use it, Corpus linguistic will provide what is the rule used in the
text. By staring the result work of Corpus linguistic, teachers are confidently
able to say to the students that the sentences are grammatically acceptable.

It is an internet of thing age. And, it will be
absolutely soon to change into internet of everything age. What about education
field? It will inevitably be colonialized by technology. Do teachers not
harness technology in the classroom activity, they will be removed sooner or
later. The idea spread widely and a lecture of public speaking, Itje Chodidjah,
is aware and chooses to engage technology deal with her teaching learning
process.
She asks the students to record their performance in
form of video. This activity is done outside the class so that the students
have a great deal of opportunities to try and error. By doing such activity,
students unconsciously practise many times. The proof is that the students take
video not only once. While, the activity in the classroom is 180 degree different.
The students have a great lively discussion as to how to improve their speaking
skill. They discuss a lots regarding difficulty and the solution. Furthermore,
what they obtain from their class, they apply to revise their speaking skill
while taking a video.
Itje Chodidjah also has a tactful way of teaching. She
tries hard to minimize the psychological barrier. The permission to make a
mistake and okay to commit also facilitates the class to improve. Besides that,
enhancing speaking skill by using group work and pair work is tremendously
needed since by the activity, students can interact and the interaction will
build the communication.
Parallel 5
The use of multimodal in every teaching learning
process is indispensable. It will vary teaching learning process. No exception
in teaching writing which considers as the most difficult skill to teach must
attach multimodal. Subur Wardoyo shares his knowledge about Maximizing
Multimodal Exercises in the Writing Class. In his explanation, He shared from
the very simple mode up to latest mode.
The first mode merely focuses on audio. The teachers
dictate their students to write whatever teachers are saying. This way is
massively used in the first age of teaching writing. This basic mode provides
grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skill. The second mode is visual. The
students look at the question consisting graph, table, or chart. Then, the
students are supposed to make a written text based on the question provided.
The researcher attempt to seek how to use more modes
in teaching learning process. Moreover, the multimodal must encourage the
students to think while they are writing. Also, It must attach audio visual. Subur
Wardoyo issued that using power point (ppt) is appropriate to multimodal in
teaching writing for teachers provide audio, video, and other sources of study
that are possible needed in facilitating students in learning writing.
Workshop 1
Kahoot is one of online learning application. Kahoot
is fascinating to create enjoyable learning process. Teachers can create many
things in Kahoot. Two teachers, Grace Nathania Clara Sabandar and Yesssy
Zakaria, are making a quiz like a game. In the beginning of workshop, speaker
divided audiences into several group to play a quiz like a game in Kahoot. The
game runs super interesting and becomes a pastime in the workshop.
The workshop entitles Kahoot! Bring the fun into the
classroom. Kahoot exceptionally brings a wonderful experience to the classroom
if teachers have ability to make Kahoot support their learning. The speaker in
workshop showed how to make a feature in Kahoot namely quiz. I tried it as
well. I must make an account first in order to get access to Kahoot. The
speaker asked audiences to make a quiz with five questions only. Audiences can
write everything since it is solely a trial.
After the audiences had made a quiz in Kahoot, the
speaker asked to share the account and also the quiz that was made with her.
Some of audiences shares their works. It highly motivates audiences to be more
serious to use technology in their classes.
Workshop 2
The improvement of virtual reality (VR) is rapidly
increase in this twenty first century. By using VR, people are able to visit
wherever they would like to. It is not visit in the term of attend to the place
yet they can image as if they are there by using VR technology. In teaching
learning case, teachers of history for instance can invite the student to
travel to historical places or even to feel a war. The students must experience
more lively learning than reading a text book. Otherwise, it still needs much
time until the Virtual Reality become a reality in teaching learning process.
Made Hery Santosa bring the idea Virtual Reality:
Enhancing thinking skill of generation Z in the age of digital distraction. The
very simple notion of him is that bringing as reality as possible material into
classroom to facilitate students’ learning process and achieve better
understanding. He invites one of the audiences to try VR in his workshop. The
audience felt extremely excited. His presentation emphasis the way of Z
generation tendency of studying. And technology is mainly part of it.
Made Hery Santosa uttered that VR is played with human
brain perception. It is allowed people to think that they are really in the
field imaged by the VR. It also brings consequences. One of them is that people
should stabilize themselves before and after using the VR since it is two
obvious different world, cyber and reality word.
Plenary 1
TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical and Content
Knowledge. This basic idea is bringing technology to enhance learning
achievement. Actually, PACK or PCK is not a novice thing in a teaching learning
process. Conversely, the engagement of technology into the classroom is the
basic one so that the term of PACK itself must be considered one more time. If
teachers do not pay attention to this rapid shift, the teachers themselves will
be removed.
Dr. Nur Arifa Drajati as a plenary speaker in iTELL 2018
share much regarding TPACK. Technology is ubiquitous. People use technology
like it is primary need. This phenomena must be aware and how to make it as a
future chance for future school. In TPAC age, pedagogical learning that must be
considered more in the term of how to instruct and use the method, project
based learning, and think pair share or group work.
The content knowledge remain the same such as fact,
concept and theories. Likewise, how to cover up the content knowledge with
technology. 21th century quality learning will have four dimension
as follows: active learning, authentic learning, reflective learning, and
collaborative learning. By combining the four dimension the teaching learning
process is expected to be better.
Plenary 2
Technology have two side. One sides is a chance for
the shiny better future. On the contrary, another side is dark isolated path.
Riezky Novyana from British Council uncovered audience mind up as to Cyber
Bullying and Child Protection. Instant internet in every single mobile phone
brought by people including learner to everywhere allows more chance for every
bad guy to harm people mind and psychology so-called cyber Bullying.
The pace of people in internet is well-recorded named
digital footprint. Photos, videos, text, link, browsing, and so on can be
tracked and provide comprehend information about a person without he or she
realize. It can be a bad thing when someone bad uses the information to commit
a crime in the name of someone else. Or bad information of people can be used
to bully them. The effect of cyber bullying is more destructive since internet
exists wherever and whenever.
Teacher as well as parents have high responsibility to
build habit that will be able to protect children from cyber bullying. Children
must understand that they are not supposed to upload private file to anyone, they
must ignore strangers particularly who asked to meet. Two tips mentioned at
least will help the children to protect themselves while they are surfing in
the internet.
Change or left behind. Move or miss tomorrow. Education
must be a dynamic field since
it is the way to prepare mankind to be ready to face the real world. The rapid
improvement of technology unconsciously impact to the class. It will influence how
a class is conducted, how the materials are obtain, and how teachers, learners,
and parents interact. Technology is novice thing in education yet it is tremendously
fundamental. Therefore, since the cornerstone is added, everything upper must
be shifted.
Dr. A. Gumawang Jati, M.A. totally concerns about
technology in language learning and presents TELL: From resources to Thinking
Skills. When an adequate technology used by teacher to creating supporting atmosphere
to study for both learners and teachers should also lead to thinking skills. Technology
can be sources of learning and creating of thinking skill is the responsibility
of teachers. Here are some technology that can be freely use to vary teaching learning
process. They are kahoot.com, edpuzzle.com, onlinequizcreator.com, pedlet.com,
canva.com. They are solely a small number of websites which can be harness for
learning.
